I was very excited to get the red fabrics and start making the hexagons for Cornelian. I love the colours and prints.
Helen has these great paper templates that you iron on to the fabric and then glue down the seam allowance The papers do not need to be removed, they will turn to soft fibres when the quilt is washed.
So I was gluing away and stitching them together to form the hexagon piece to be appliqued onto the stitched block. All sounding very simple so far.
Until I got to trying to get it all to fit together. It seems that I have misread the instructions and placed the corner designs in the wrong spot, again. Stupid me!! This is the second time I have done this, I am really starting to think I am bit of a dummy.
Is there anyone else out there in Blogland that is doing Cornelian? I would be very very very grateful for any tips on what I am reading wrong in the instructions. I have now tried making myself up a template on plastic to try and stop myself from messing up again.
On a happier note, I wanted show off some of the very nice fabrics I received in a birthday fat quarter swap I take part in. Now just to decide what to make with them. So much to choose from.
Off to try again and hope I can't possibly mess up another block......

ReplyDeleteHi I don't know if I can be of help as I am also doing Cornelian BOM. On the design sheet there is a small diagram showing to draw a 14" square on background fabric. Then you measure in 1 1/2" from the outside on each diagonal for the small embroidery. Hope this fixes your problem. Robyn (Non Blogger)

I just started my Cornelian, too (May 2014), and I figured out the "issue" (my hexies didn't fit, either, and I was close to tears after all that work and following the directions perfectly). I'll go ahead and tell you, just in case. The directions are incorrect when they say to "measure in 1 1/2" for the placement of the corner motifs. You should really only measure in 3/4"!!!! Think about it mathematically: if you measure in at 1 1/2" on all 4 corners, your little stems will be in the corners of an 11" block, NOT a 12 1/2" block! You trim your 14" block down to 12 1/2" when the stitching and hexies are done: to get a 12 1/2" block from a 14" block, you are only taking off 3/4" all the way around, NOT 1 1/2".
